This is one of the most popular lakes in the Chamonix valley and the trails visiting the lake are some of the most popular in the valley. The lake is quite large and you can walk around the rim to take the famous "Reflection of the Mont Blanc Massif" photo. The lake lies at an altitude of 2352 meters which also means it will only be snow free from the middle June to roughly the end of September. You need to check the conditions ahead of time for sure.
The Refuge de Lac Blanc sits right on the lake shore and offers both accommodation and food. It is very popular and accommodation should be booked months ahead of time. The lake is easiest to visit by taking the Flegere lift and then either walking up to the lake or taking the Index lift which then leaves you a flatter traverse to the lake. We got a detailed trail description for the shorter, family friendlier version using the Index lift. There are many ways to reach Lac Blanc from the valley floor including trails starting of in Chamonix, Les Praz, Argentiere and Tre-le-Champ. We got a nice long trail on our website that starts at Col des Montets and traverses the grand balcon sud and also includes a visit to the Lacs Noir and the Lac Cornu.
